27 year old teacher here hung herself in a nightgown with some sort of scarf in the room she rented at a boarding house. It was clearly a partial suspension hanging.

She was discovered in the morning when her landlady knocked on her door for breakfast and she did not answer.

There was initially some concern that she may have been murdered and the hanging staged by an angry ex-boyfriend with whom she'd been having problems. The room was in some disarray, causing some of her friends to believe it may have been rifled. The scene report initially stated that this concern was also aided by the fact that the woman's tongue was not protruding, which it often does in hangings.

After a full investigation of the scene, however, the determination was made that it was definitely suicide. A suicide note was discovered and it was mentioned that the noose was placed such that it would not necessarily put pressure on the tongue, causing it to extend. Furthermore the scene report indicated that the woman had lost bladder control while hanging, with a visible puddle of urine beneath her. It also mentioned that she emptied her bowels during the strangulation, with wet feces all over her buttocks and the back of her negligee. The Indonesian police are always keen to point out that this abandonment of bodily control is extremely common in hanging deaths.

While several of these factors may also be present in a homicidal strangling, their location and specificity in this case caused the police to investigate the death as a suicide.

Although, I did learn something from this thread. I didn't know that going noose-up-front kept your tongue from bulging out post-mortem.

It doesn't always, I don't think. I'd have to grab a forensics book to see exactly how the placement affects whether or not the tongue protrudes, but you'll note looking through the hangings on this site that it sometimes does and sometimes doesn't.

I noticed in these hanging corpses that their legs are dark in colour, can someone kindly explain to me why that is?
