In December 2017, the decapitated body of a man, later identified as 23-year-old Colombian national Joan S.E.U., was found next to a waterworks in Cancún, Quintana Roo state, Mexico. Sitting in-between the corpse's legs was the skinned head of the deceased, with his penis in his mouth. The flayed skin from the face was also found on the corpse. A narcomensaje nearby delivered threats against the civilian population, the government, and an opposing cartel.

It was unofficially believed that Joan belonged to a network of Colombians who worked as loan sharks for the 'Los Goteros' gang, known for giving loans to local merchants with 10% daily interest. A grim fate also awaited Joan's girlfriend, Yesly T.G.G. - she was also kidnapped, and whilst her body was never found, anonymous cartel members contacted Yesly's family to tell them she had been killed and buried in a grave.

In June 2022, three corrupt police officers were found guilty of using their authority to kidnap the victims and hand them over to the cartel, whilst two fellow Colombians were found guilty of suggesting the kidnapping of their compatriots. They were sentenced to a total of 230 years in jail.
