2011 Pinheiro Jail Riot, Maranhao Brazil: 6 Inmates Killed, 4 Beheaded
More than 90 detainees were confined in the regional police-station jail in Pinheiro, Maranhao state, Brazil, although it was built for 30. On the night of February 7 to 8, 2011, inmates rioted, resulting in a prolonged standoff. The rioters killed six prisoners, each detained on charges of rape or child sexual abuse. Four victims were decapitated, and their heads were suspended from cell bars. Press coverage identified only one victim: Jose Agostinho Bispo Pereira, in his 50s, a farm laborer serving 63 years for abusing his daughters and a granddaughter over a prolonged period. Circulating captions initially caused confusion with the Pedrinhas complex in Sao Luis, but the incident did not happen there. Pedrinhas had experienced a separate, deadlier riot three months earlier. |
