2002 "Batatais Massacre" - Young Man Murdered Five Relatives
Batatais, São Paulo, Brazil In the early hours of 26th March 2002, five members of a family were murdered, and two others were critically injured, in what was dubbed the "Batatais Massacre". 24-year-old house painter Carlos Fabiano Faccion, with the help of his girlfriend, 20-year-old Edna Emília Milani, and a 13-year-old identified only as C.R.S.D., perpetrated the murders on his own relatives. The five deceased were: Carlos' father, Carlos Roberto Faccion, 48 Carlos' mother, Maria Aparecida da Silva, 46 Carlos' sister, Elaine Cristina Faccion, 24, who was pregnant - the foetus also died Carlos' brother, Lucas Donizeti Faccion, a teenager A 3-year-old child, Talia Roberto Faccion - sources differed on whether it was Carlos' sister, or a niece (a daughter of Elaine). She is blurred out in one of the photos and doesn't appear anywhere else. The weapons used were iron bars and knives. The victims suffered blows to the head and cuts to the neck. Lucas was still alive when Carlos and his accomplices left the scene, but then Carlos returned to pick up his wallet. When he noticed Lucas was still alive, he finished him off. Two other children in the house, aged 7 and 4, suffered grievous head trauma and were permanently incapacitated. Elaine, whose throat had been cut, used the last of her strength to protect the four-year-old. Carlos' 72-year-old grandmother was uninjured - it is believed Carlos simply never saw her in the dark, and would have killed her if he had. The bodies were discovered by Carlos Roberto's boss, who noticed he hadn't shown up for work. Carlos and his accomplices confessed, although Carlos claimed he didn't remember anything. The motive, described by some sources as "trivial", was apparently that Carlos' family opposed his relationship to Edna, who had drug trafficking links. There was also tension between Carlos and his father over the former's drug use. C.R.S.D. agreed to participate in exchange for half a kilogram of marijuana. Shortly afterwards, both Carlos and Edna were assaulted by fellow prisoners. Although Edna was kept in solitary confinement, at least twenty fellow female prisoners, whilst outside to sunbathe, broke the padlock on Edna's cell, hung clothes on clotheslines to obscure the guards' view, and beat her up with stones and iron pipes. Edna received about 150 stitches to her head, fractured her skull, broke her nose, and suffered a facial bone fracture. Carlos was charged with five aggravated homicides, two attempted homicides, and one abortion. After an appeal in 2007, he was sentenced to 138 years in prison, although Brazilian law only allows him to serve thirty years, regardless of sentence. Edna received 128 years as the victims were not her biological relatives. C.R.S.D. served a socio-educational measure. Warning!
