2 Semis, 10 Car Accident

A multi-vehicle crash involving two semi-trailers in the south bound lane of U.S. 41 at the Richmond St. overpass in Appleton, WI. on Wednesday May 11, 2011 at 11:40am. Four people were injured with one, 47 y.o. female airlifted to a hospital in critical condition. She is expected to live.

The accident was caused by the two semis not seeing that traffic had slowed down for the road construction ahead of them. The semis plowed into the back of the slowed/stopped traffic in front of them.

The critically injured female was inside the, obviously shorter now, minivan. Her chief complaint was that she couldn't breathe, and she had pain in her right leg. Most of the ribs on her right side were broken and she had no air movement on the right side with little air movement on the left side. When EMTs removed her from the vehicle, she had a grey, ashen skin color (means patient's golden hour is about 45 minutes up).

This accident happened at 11:40am but the clean-up and investigation was still going on at 6pm when I drove by.
