1989 Digos Massacre: NPA Rebels Kill 39 at Binaton Chapel, Philippines
Around seventy New People's Army guerrillas attacked a United Church of Christ service on the morning of Sunday, June 25, 1989, at a chapel in Sitio Rano, Barangay Binaton, then within the municipality of Digos, Davao del Sur, southern Philippines. After opening fire on the congregation, they shot at nearby homes where women and children had sought refuge. The attack killed thirty-nine people, including twenty-two children, ten women and seven men. The victims included a two-month-old infant and a pregnant woman. Elder Clemente Ayap and Abadya Ayap were among those beheaded. The congregation consisted of recent converts from the Bagobo-Tagabawa people. Before the attack, the community had joined the anti-communist vigilante group Ituman and declined to pay revolutionary taxes demanded by the NPA. Within two days, the NPA's Southern Mindanao command took responsibility and apologized, but said armed men among the worshippers had fired first. Nobody has ever been prosecuted. The killings are commonly known as the Digos massacre, and are also sometimes called the Rano massacre. · · · · |

Re: 1989 Digos Massacre: NPA Rebels Kill 39 at Binaton Chapel, Philippines
It's very sad. There's a lot of crazy shit going on in the Philippines. There are both communist extremists and Islamic extremists; Islamic terrorists cause most of the problems but communists committed this particular atrocity. I have relatives who have joined some of these groups...
