15 Killed in School Bus Crash in Prachinburi, Thailand, February 28, 2014
Fifteen people were reported killed when a double-decker bus carrying students and teachers crashed in Prachinburi province, Thailand, at about 5 a.m. on February 28, 2014. The bus was descending a steep, winding section of Highway 304 near kilometer marker 42 in Na Di district when it lost control, struck the rear of an 18-wheel truck and then hit a roadside tree. Police said the brakes may have failed or the driver may have fallen asleep. One side of the upper deck was crushed. About 60 students, mostly ages 10 to 15, and their teachers were traveling from Bandonglopmaisamakkeewittaya School in Nakhon Ratchasima province for a field trip to the Pattaya area. Contemporary accounts put the death toll at 13 students and two teachers, with 11 dying at the scene. Later accounts gave a toll of 14. Reported injury figures ranged from 37 to more than 45. The bus driver fled after the crash, and police began searching for him. |
