Klooga Concentration Camp Massacre in Estonia, September 19, 1944
Klooga was a subcamp of the Vaivara concentration camp complex in Harju County, Estonia. Most of its prisoners had been brought from the Vilna ghetto. On September 19, 1944, German and Estonian SS personnel shot prisoners in the forest beside the camp as German forces withdrew from the area. The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum says about 2,400 Jews and about 100 Soviet prisoners of war were killed. Soviet troops arrived on September 28 and found bodies stacked between layers of logs on pyres prepared for burning. Photographs taken in September and October 1944 show the stacked and partly burned corpses, Soviet soldiers and war-crimes investigators examining the site, and German and Estonian prisoners of war burying the victims in trenches and pulling a cart loaded with bodies. Other photographs show a group of survivors, the camp entrance, a multilingual warning sign threatening to shoot anyone who failed to stop, and an Estonian propaganda poster calling for revenge for Klooga. |
