I apologize for the French commentary.
Stade Rennais and Senegalese international defender Kader Mangane (pictured right) will not play domestic football again until June after Ligue de Football Professionel’s (LFP) Disciplinary Committee hammered him for a fierce challenge on Valenciennes midfielder Jonathan Lacourt.
The big defender had been beaten by the VA midfielder’s pace in last Saturday’s encounter and leaped into a challenge showing his studs. He caught the 22-year-old just above the ankle and the former French Under-20 star was left in a crumpled, painful heap as his leg had suffered a double fracture. The Avignon-born player was rushed immediately to hospital, where he underwent immediate surgery.
Lacourt will, consequently, not play again this season and neither will Mangane; the committee considered his situation and banned him until June 1, despite his obvious shows of remorse after the incident.
The committee cited a previous incident in which Pierre-Alain Frau, then of Paris Saint-Germain, seriously injured Stephane Noro, then of Sedan, and was banned for a two-month period.
Carlos Sanchez of Valenciennes was also sent-off in the same fixture, albeit in far more controversial circumstances as his challenge initially looked bad but, on closer inspection, was actually rather tame. He has been handed a one-match ban; a decision that has drawn the ire of head coach Antoine Kombouare.
“We’re going to go through the appeal process,” he raged to L’Equipe. “It’s a decision that is unethical!”
Lacourt’s injury will prove a far more pressing long term concern to the Nord club while Mangane’s lengthy suspension will severely hurt Rennes’ chances of Europe, especially as the Breton outfit lost Jimmy Briand to serious injury earlier this week.
