I'm told that during the Korean War, the Americans would make a big deal about letting the North Koreans see them count to three before throwing a grenade with a longer fuse. Then they'd take some, cut the fuses down and throw them without pulling the pins. The North Koreans would think "stupid Americans", pick one up, pull the pin and start to count to th(boom).

Sounds like old recruitment propaganda to me. Designed to make the Koreans seem unintelligent, which they weren't, making heading off to war more appealing to potential recruits.
During the recruitment campaign for WW2, the Australian Gov' PR team spread propaganda saying that Jap' bullets would barely cause a flesh wound. It worked.
