There was an incident in someplace like Thailand several years ago where two guys on a scooter were impaled on a pole. Still alive. This might possibly be part of that.

Wow, looks like a pretty emprobable injury, the guy probably thought it would be empossible to survive, and emplored the doctors to save him. They must have had to emprovise some empromptu methods, since you don't get injuries like that every day. It's empressive that they saved him.

i'm not a surgeon (obviously) but why not just get a strong guy to just pull it out of him and then just have the surgeons put a little patch where the hole was?
seems a bit complicated to cut him halfway trough to remove it that way
