Re: Cop Mistakes a Cane from a 70 Yo Vietnam Vet for a Shotgun and Shoots at Him
Dude that old man was badass though. He's still standing after the cop unloads on him, when the cop gets to him he says calmly "that hurt" and while the cop is crying and freaking out he says "I'll be alright." But yeah, that cop was a trigger happy pussy, they should be trained better for identifying actual weapons. Yes he should lose his job, if he worked at McDonald's and didn't wash his hands after going to the bathroom he'd lose his job for putting people's health and lives in danger, same goes here. Unfortunate for him, much more unfortunate for this old vet

I agree...the officer did what he thought was right in this case, and found out seconds later that it was simply a cane the old man got out of the truck with. You could clearly see that he was immediately distraught...I feel so bad for him.

Trained better for identifying weapons?? This was a night stop, you can't tell shit from shit. He saw what looked like a shotgun, and reacted. I can guarantee not many cops have people get out of vehicles with canes in their hand, so it's understandable why the officer reacted this way. I'm no cop nut-hugger, but come on...

Re: Cop Mistakes a Cane from a 70 Yo Vietnam Vet for a Shotgun and Shoots at Him
Unfortunate shift in police training. It used to be about keeping the peace and community relations. Now it's an us against them mentality and personal saftey above everything. That's drilled in from day one that there's an enemy out there nowadays. Police no longer are trained to de-escalate situations. To the contrary, they are trained to intimidate and escalate. This is the result. This should be about community building, not treating and being trained that the community is an insurgency.

Re: Cop Mistakes a Cane from a 70 Yo Vietnam Vet for a Shotgun and Shoots at Him
I've seen for the past few decades a de-socialization of police and civilians. I think it has become, or is becoming entrenched in law enforcement, everyone is presumed the enemy. These days, most agencies are hiring straight from military, as soon as delisting. Then they enforce an law enforcement ethic while off the job, which usually instills separation from common society. It started in more metropolitan areas, but now rural communities are starting to see the trend. They have reasons for this, I jusg don't think its proving healthy. |

Re: Cop Mistakes a Cane from a 70 Yo Vietnam Vet for a Shotgun and Shoots at Him
That's total bullshit...I'm actively involved in setting curriculum statewide for basic and advanced law enforcement training and I can say first hand that academy recruits are absolutely not trained to view their personal safety above everything or anyone. That's an uninformed statement. I can also say with certainty that academy recruits are not trained to intimidate and escalate a situation. Come on...where are you getting this ridicules and overly simplistic idea? Are you just another zany wild eyed anti-police progressive with an preconceived agenda? Or have you just had a bad experience or been wrongfully treated by the police and are looking for an excuse? Law enforcement training in America (and Canada for that matter) is second to none as far as complexity and quality. In fact it's so much better today that it ever has been it like comparing kindergarden to graduate school. It's so much better and more relevant today that it was when I went through the academy thirty years ago it's like comparing apples and oranges. These young police officers are without a doubt some of the finest trained, educated, healthiest, psychologically prepared for the job, and overall prepared than any thing law enforcement has ever produced. The quality of the candidates today are far superior than any generation of cop in the past. Get your facts straight or shut up...stop getting hysterical and putting out false and misguided information. |
