Re: Whiskey's Briefing Room

We liked our fuelers, they were pretty johnny-on-the-spot most of the time... but as for our ammo guys... slightly different story
Air Force is that way, too. Pilot steps to the jet, ready to do his/her preflight, checks the forms, takes the crewchief and starts to do the walk around. “I’m supposed to have a slant load on TER’s and four AIM-9’s. I see the TER’s, but no stores (weapons). What’s up with that, chief?” “Let’s go talk to the weapons crew, sir.”

The weapons crew is in their truck, eating an MRE, listening to a podcast, watching porn, etc. Pilot tight-butts it right over to the weapons truck drivers door and semi-authoritatively asks where his boom-booms are. The reply is always the same - “Waiting on ammo, sir”.

Putting this in here as to not jumble up the media thread with my babbling.

As for its success, the Abrams is an absolute technological murder machine. I'd be scared to be on the receiving end, they are no joke and neither are German Leopards, British Challengers, French Leclercs and South Korean K2's.

The M1 Abrams' turret stabilization system and the ballistic computer never ceased to amaze me... imagine a Toyota truck-sized target at 2,400 meters (well over a mile) when you are looking through the sight and hit the "lase" key. Not only are you determining range to target, it records the ambient temperature, ammo temperature, barometric pressure, altitude, wind, bore reference and relative humidity from the sensors in a split second and injects that new data into the "0" point of impact of your gun sight (reticle). You see the reticle "jump" a little bit as the computer compensates for the new data. You make a minor adjustment of where you're aiming. You bellow out a "ON THE WAY" and hit the trigger on your cadillacs, you feel the concussive blast push the tank's sight picture up and you momentarily lose sight of the target. You hear the "CLANG CLANG" of the aftcap ejecting out of the main gun breech, which bounces off the deflector and hits the steel turret floor. After less than a second you're still looking through the sights, the small amount of dust clears, you regain visual of your moving truck target right as you see the round strike the forward portion of the truck, right where you put it.

I was absolutely shocked.
How many Abrams were actually lost in the Iraq War? I've had one person tell me only 1 was a casualty, and another person told me that 3 were lost.

1. "Dozens of American 155-mm self-propelled guns M-109L are getting closer to the borders of Ukraine."

2. "Another echelon of more than 20 Italian 155-mm self-propelled guns M109L sent to Ukraine

Italy has already sent 20+ M109Ls to Ukraine, and in total there are about 300 units in storage."

A total of 23 M1A1s, out of just over 2,000 Abrams, were damaged or destroyed during the war. Of the 9 Abrams tanks destroyed, 7 were destroyed by friendly fire and 2 intentionally destroyed to prevent capture by the Iraqi Army. The 14 others took minor combat damage, with little effect on their operational readiness so none were lost as a result of enemy action.

Thanks very much! I looked into it further to see how many tankers were killed, and actually, in all of these, (Including one dead-on artillery strike, and some inadvertent hits on frontal and side armor (by other Abrams tanks), NO ONE WAS KIA. There were wounds, but not a single death.
That's a pretty amazing record!

Re: Whiskey's Briefing Room

"The counteroffensive will not be easy.

According to The Financial Times, 35,000 of our fighters will meet with 140,000 Russian soldiers dispersed along a 950-kilometer front line. Note that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are unlikely to stretch the forces, most likely it will be a quick, concentrated strike (as with Kherson and Kharkiv region).

To carry out a quick attack, we are stocking up on advanced armored vehicles and preparing soldiers. The Russian Federation, on the other hand, brings museum exhibits to the front and forcibly calls on chmobiks. We have great chances to break through the defenses and put the enemy to flight. If this succeeds, then all their prepared fortifications will be useless.

The United States is skeptical about the counteroffensive, but we have been underestimated before - the defense of Kyiv. Kharkiv. Kherson. Despite everything, we won. And we will win"
