This particular incident was a part of a direct cycle of violence that began with the killing of three IRA members in Gibraltar. Their funerals were attacked by the bloodthirsty lunatic Michael Stone. It was after those things happened that the events in the OP occurred. I don't condone what the people did but I understand it.
The shit talking about Northern Ireland is cheap. The situation is complex and like most things there isn't a clear right/wrong, good/bad. The IRA's violence was a direct result of intransigence on the part of the NI government in the 1960's, this violence might have been more easily contained had the authorities and the British Army not then used fairly heavy handed and biased tactics to quell the unrest. Read up on internment, Bloody Sunday 1972. Again, this doesn't make the IRA right in what they do but it is stupid to judge people without knowing the context of their actions.
