They were told to leave the base and have some time off because they are in N ireland they carried pistols. IRA often targeted soidiers that were off duty. They were not under cover just off duty normal soildiers. They were told about the funeral and told which way to go to avoid it but they took a wrong turn and were unable to turn around the IRA and their supporters thaught they were unionists gunmen and beat them till they was dead they were found tortured with every bone broken.

All soildiers carried a yellow card a terms an conditions thing they signed that only allows them to fire on someone if that person shows a gun to them. if these soildiers had fired on the crowd and no gun found on the bodies those soilders would of been in prison for a life sentance.

U-turn would have been the better option IMHO, 'cause w/ reversing, the car loses out a lot on speed and impact, I mean, how long are you supposed to drive reversing afterwards, anyways?

yeah but with the options, keep reversing or stop the car and try to turn around, i think i would keep reversing, even if its slow as hell it would of stopped them from being surrounded and killed
