Just moments before this Ukrainian family in Chernihiv was just coming back from a church with a festive basket of apples. Now the surviving husband holds his dead wife’s hand on a crossroad stained with her blood.

Explosions were audible in Rostov-on-Don this morning. The governor of the region explains them as sonic booms due to flights of military jets.

Bloggers say that this was an attack carried out by Ukraine using S-200 missiles. These are old Soviet era air defense missiles converted to ground attack role.

President Vladimir Putin traveled to the headquarters of Russia’s Southern Military District in Rostov-on-Don, near the Ukrainian border, his first known visit there since June’s attempted mutiny by the Wagner mercenary group.

The visit was announced Saturday in a brief statement on the Kremlin website. It’s unclear when Putin visited or for how long.
