that was hard to watch, I doubt that in the heat of battle you would wait for them to put thier hands up and just shoot like they were.

Russian Ka-52 with a damaged tail boom.

After being hit by an air defense missile.

But first version, according to a Russian source, was that the external fuel tanks were dropped, they were blown back, as a result, one of the tanks broke the tail boom of the helicopter. When the version did not stand up to criticism, they admitted that there was a hit.

Will take a long time to repair.

how is it still flying stable? my limited understanding is that a tail rotor is needed to counter the torque from the main rotors, i.e without it it spins out of control.

Ka-52 has no tail rotor. It has counter rotating main rotors, so no need for tail.
