I think that was a part of the autoloader during/after loading the propellant pack. This would come after the 155mm shell is loaded into the breech.

In the old days, the projectile and propellant was all one piece in a brass casing. Now it's separate. In Abrams tanks however, it's all one piece but the non-brass shell casing combining everything burns up in the barrel during firing.
