Iran disbands 'morality police' amid two and half months of nationwide protests

Iran’s Attorney General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri announced the abolition of the country’s morality police by the relevant authorities, Isna news agency reported Sunday.

"The morality police has nothing to do with the judiciary, and it has been abolished by those who created it," he said Saturday night in the holy city of Qom.

President Ebrahim Raisi said in televised comments Saturday that Iran's republican and Islamic foundations were constitutionally entrenched "but there are methods of implementing the constitution that can be flexible". (sic - media too important to follow rules of punctuation in their END PRODUCT)

On September 13, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was arrested for allegedly flouting the country's strict dress code. Three days later, she died in hospital - sparking violent protests across the country that show little sign of respite.

To date, more than 440 people have died due to the unrest - according to NGO Iran Human Rights - and some 14,000 people have been arrested.


The morality police, known as the Gasht-e Ershad (guidance patrols), was a branch created under conservative President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2006 to "spread the culture of decency and hijab.”

Its unit comprises of men in green uniforms and women wearing black chadors, which cover the head and upper body.

The Islamic Republic is also said to be reviewing the 1983 law that requires women to cover their heads.

This week, international media reports quoted Iran’s attorney general Mohammad Jafar Montazeri proclaiming the state’s morality police—known for enforcing its strict dress code on women—had been “abolished.” But question marks about whether Montazeri’s comments were an accurate reflection of the Islamic Republic’s policies immediately swirled.

That’s because, for many Iranians, the so-called morality police are the most visible face of the regime’s suppression of women. The current mass protests began following the death of 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini on Sept. 16 while in custody of the morality police, after being arrested for allegedly violating the country’s strict hijab rules.

The crackdown by Iran’s security forces has left at least 473 people dead, according to the Tehran-based Human Rights Activists News Agency.

Montazeri was asked in a press conference Saturday whether the “Gasht-e Ershad,” or morality police, would be disbanded. “Morality police have nothing to do with the judiciary. It was abolished from the same place it was launched. Of course, the judiciary will continue to monitor society’s behavior,” he reportedly said.

Montazeri’s comments came days after he reportedly said on Dec. 1 that Iran’s parliament is reviewing the legal requirement to wear hijab, according to an article that cited the pro-reform Iranian outlet Entekhab.

Iran says it has carried out a second execution linked to the anti-government protests engulfing the country.

A 23 year old man ,Majidreza Rahnavard was hanged "in public" early on Monday in the city of Mashhad, the judiciary announced.

A court convicted him of the charge of "enmity against God" after finding he had stabbed to death two members of the paramilitary Basij Resistance Force.

Blast heard at military plant in Iran's central city of Isfahan

DUBAI, Jan 29 (Reuters) - A loud blast was heard at a military plant in Iran's central city of Isfahan, but a security official said there were no casualties, Iranian state broadcaster IRIB said on its website early on Sunday.

"The explosion took place in one of the munitions manufacturing centres of the Defence Ministry and, according to an announcement by the ...deputy Isfahan governor for security, there were no casualties," IRIB reported.

The official, Mohammad Reza Jannesar, later told state television: "The damages are being investigated as well as the causes and elements that caused this explosion and .. will be announced later."

There have been a number of explosions and fires around Iranian military, nuclear and industrial facilities in the past few years.

The blasts have at times caused concern amid tensions over Iran's nuclear programme with Israel and the United States.
