You're right but for the wrong reason. The US has significant strategic interest in Ukraine but that's not why you won't see the US engaging Russia directly. When the US and Russia are shooting at each other, WWIII is on. It won't end well for anyone.

You're wrong on two points. First, Ukraine is the largest country in Europe second only to Russia, it sits between Russia and western Europe, and it's a democracy. It's strategically and politically very important. If Ukraine were to join NATO it would be a huge blow to Putin's Russia. Second, the US and NATO aren't provoking anything. Russia has surrounded an independent democracy with an invasion force and is threatening to invade it. Calling the US the provocateur is ridiculous. |
