Re: USA - Pennsylvania Bridge Collapse - 28 January 2022
The collapse came in the wake of troubling inspections dating to 2011 that show the aging span has been rated in poor condition, according to the National Bridge Inventory. Records from the inventory show that the bridge was consistently found to be in poor shape during inspections from 2011 to 2017, with estimated repairs at $1.5 million. Mr. Gainey said the bridge was last inspected in September 2021. A statewide report from last year noted the bridge was still in poor condition. We will need a detailed investigation to determine why the bridge failed. While the bridge certainly needed to be replaced, there was no indication it was going to fail in the short term. Bridges are rated on a scale of zero to nine, with zero being a bridge that is unsafe for vehicles. The Fern Hollow Bridge was rated a four, according to the National Bridge Inspection Standards, indicating it was structurally deficient but supposedly not in danger of collapse. |

It was a Prize Bridge in 1974!! Where did it go wrong?!?! Was it hanging out with the wrong crowd? Drinking and gambling? Perhaps it was just PLAYING bridge, instead of actually BEING a bridge! Maybe pier pressure brought it to it's knees! |

Re: USA - Pennsylvania Bridge Collapse - 28 January 2022
Ha ha. Can't image any 1974 Pittsburgh cars that aren't rotted to piles of iron oxide, and the bridges are no different. The NTSB is such a waste case. Scrap them too. It doesn't take a rocket scientist or a fleet of overpaid bureaucrats to determine that old steel/concrete is rotted out and needs scrapped before it hurts somebody. Naah, it is much cheaper to put a coat of paint on the rusty steel and mortar over the spalled concrete and corroded re-bar. All you need is some fool to sign off on it and hope it stands until retirement. |
