Royal Australian Air Force Plane Makes Belly Landing
On July 18, 2006 a F-111C lost its port main wheel shortly after takeoff. The crew, consisting of Flying Officer Peter Komar, a rookie pilot, and Flight Lieutenant Luke Warner, an experienced navigator, were alerted by the tower about the missing wheel. After dumping fuel in nearby Moreton Bay for two hours, they were instructed to attempt a belly landing. During the landing, the aircraft's tailhook was lowered, catching a cable on the runway. This helped bring the jet to a halt, creating a plume of sparks as it slid on its belly along the tarmac. The aircraft was never repaired after this incident. Its fin and rudder are preserved at RAAF Base Amberley. |

No way he could have done a better, smoother job of landing then that. |
