At approximately 11:08 a.m. on April 20, 2026, a single-engine Cessna 172S Skyhawk SP (Registration: N2126F) was on its final approach to Whiteman Airport.

Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft flying unusually low before it struck 35,000-volt power lines near the intersection of Van Nuys Boulevard and Ralston Avenue.

The impact snapped a utility pole and sent a shower of sparks across the roadway before the plane flipped and slammed upside down into the parking lot of an O'Reilly Auto Parts store.

Seconds after the crash, nearly 20 "Good Samaritans" who were shopping nearby rushed toward the wreckage. Ignoring the smell of leaking fuel and the danger of downed wires, the group worked together to physically lift the overturned fuselage.

They managed to pull the sole occupant—a 72-year-old male pilot—from the cockpit just as emergency responders arrived.

"They saved his life," said one witness. "He was unconscious and trapped. Without those people jumping in immediately, the outcome could have been much worse."

The pilot, whose name has not yet been released, was rushed to a local trauma center in critical condition. Remarkably, despite the crash occurring in a densely populated commercial zone, no injuries were reported on the ground.

The incident caused a significant power outage, affecting between 250 and 360 customers in the Pacoima area as crews from the Department of Water and Power worked to secure the snapped high-voltage lines.

The aircraft is owned by Vista Aviation Inc., a flight school and maintenance facility based at Whiteman Airport.

The FAA and NTSB have launched a joint investigation to determine if the crash was caused by mechanical failure or pilot error during the short 10-minute flight.

The crash has reignited a fierce local debate. L.A. City Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez has renewed calls to close the county-owned Whiteman Airport, citing a history of accidents in the surrounding residential neighborhood.

"This is yet another reminder of the persistent threat this airport poses to our community," Rodriguez said in a statement.

The NTSB is expected to release a preliminary report on the crash within the next two weeks.
