I saw a special on television years ago about this. What was said at the time was that the pilot of the B-52 saw a smaller aircraft crossing his path and tightened his turn to avoid colliding with it. Don't know if this is true or not. I do remember seeing a close-up of one crew member ejecting at the last second only to be engulfed by the explosion.

he damn near ripped the wings off on the first turn to the south, losing altitude and airspeed in the process...then he continues back around, and tries to pull a 90 degree bank...its as if the douchebag was on coke or something. complete lack of judgement. fuck him, RIP to the innocents who had to ride with him
