An Azerbaijan Airlines passenger aircraft crashed near Kazakhstan's Aktau Airport close to the Caspian Sea on Wednesday morning, Kazakh authorities said, with around 40 people feared dead.

The aircraft was was flying from Baku in Azerbaijan to Grozny in Russia, the Transport Ministry said in a post to its official Telegram channel.

"According to preliminary information from the Azerbaijani side, there were 62 passengers and five crew members on board," the ministry said.

Kazakhstan's Ministry of Emergency Situations said in a post to Telegram that 28 33 people survived the crash, with 22 hospitalized.

Among the passengers were 37 Azerbaijani citizens, six from Kazakhstan, three from Kyrgyzstan and 16 from Russia, the Transport Ministry said, citing "preliminary data."

Azerbaijan Airlines said in a post to X that the aircraft "made an emergency landing" around 2 miles from Aktau. The aircraft was an Embraer 190 model with flight number J2-8243.

The Kazakh Health Ministry later published a list of 29 survivors, including two children. A miracle someone survives that.

A preliminary investigation found the plane collided with birds and was diverted to Aktau because of an emergency on board.

This is clearly not the result of a gas cylinder or a collision with a flock of birds. Surviving passengers of the plane also vied with each other to tell about the explosion.

"For the third time, something exploded. There was an explosion - I wouldn't say it was inside the plane . Where I was sitting, the paneling next to me flew off - RT quotes passenger Subhonkul Rakhimov as saying."

Another passenger, Zaur Mamedov, said he heard a couple of explosions. A third passenger also noted an explosion in the tail section and shrapnel throughout the cabin.
