A tarantula hawk is a spider wasp which hunts tarantulas as food for its larvae. Tarantula hawks belong to any of the many species in the genera Pepsis and Hemipepsis in the family Pompilidae (Spider wasps).

The more familiar species are up to two inches (5 cm) long with a blue-black body and bright rust-colored wings (other species have black wings with blue highlights), making them among the largest of wasps. The coloring on their wings warns potential predators that they are dangerous (Aposematism). Their long legs have hooked claws for grappling with their victims. The sting of a female tarantula hawk can be up to 1/3 inch (7 mm) long, and is considered among the most painful in the insect world.

That is wasp is called a tarantula hawk. It hunts down large spiders and paralyzes them with their extremely potent venom. It then drags the spiders back to the spiders den and lays its eggs inside of it. When the eggs hatch, the larva feed on the flesh of the spider until they mature.

These wasps are known to have the second most painful sting in the world, second only to the bullet ant.

Recorded by a mobile camera coincidently on a very early morning of a summer day in our house garden in Saidon, Lebanon.

Tarantula Hawk Wasps capture, sting, and paralyze the spider, then they either drag the spider back into her own burrow or transport their prey to a specially prepared nest where a single egg is laid on the spiders body, and the entrance is covered. The wasp larva, upon hatching, begins to suck the juices from the still-living spider. After the larva grows a bit, it plunges into the spider's body and feeds voraciously, avoiding vital organs for as long as possible to keep it fresh.

If you grab one and hold it down the butt end comes swinging around and the stinger comes out like a tattoo needle. I don't know how I avoided getting stung. But it would sure make my adrenaline go shooting up. It's a real rush.

I never considered there were more than one species of Tarantula Hawk Wasp. I didn't even know they were related. The large one I knew was a Tarantula Hawk but the smaller ones I had no idea. They really give me the creeps to see them in action. I have seen them also eating honey when they get a chance.
