Amazing they haven't destroyed it yet. I imagine that the extensive damage isn't from just the weather but also a result of the tolerant religion we all know as Islam.  |

The sphinx....an ancient beacon to the amnesia of our origins. Did you know? The sphinx had water erosion by the looks of it, which would make it ten thousand years older at least of how old we currently accept it is. If true, we have a lot to learn and accept. |

There is a story that the nose was broken off by a cannonball fired by Napoleon's soldiers, that still lives on today. Other variants indict British troops, the Mamluks, and others. Sketches of the Sphinx by the Dane Frederic Louis Norden, made in 1738 and published in 1757, show the Sphinx missing its nose.

I totally agree with you Bigmikeymike. I'm sure we'd all like to have seen a photo or true painting of the Sphinx and its purpose. I think it's a tragedy when ancient artifacts are purposely destroyed in the name of religion or show of power.

The damage ( missing nose) happened during the French expedition, commanded by General Bonaparte. At that time, the sphinx was almost entirely covered by sand. Same expedition found the Rosetta Stone.
