Pablo Bartholomew Bhopal Gas Tragedy, 1984: World Press Photo of the Year
Methyl isocyanate leaked from the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, on the night of December 2 and 3, 1984, exposing more than 500,000 people. Officials initially recorded 2,259 deaths, while the Madhya Pradesh government later confirmed 3,787 gas-related deaths. Other estimates put the toll at about 8,000 within two weeks and more than 16,000 overall. A 2006 government affidavit counted 558,125 injuries. Pablo Bartholomew photographed an unidentified child killed in the disaster on December 4, 1984. The child lies partly covered with earth, eyes open, as an adult hand brushes soil from the head. Bartholomew's image was selected as World Press Photo of the Year in the 1985 contest for work produced in 1984. Photographer Raghu Rai also photographed the burial, producing the image known as "Burial of an Unknown Child." Also covered here: Photographic Time Line
