Russia-Georgia War in South Ossetia, August 2008
The Russia-Georgia war pitted Georgia against Russia and forces from South Ossetia and Abkhazia in August 2008. Fighting took place in South Ossetia and elsewhere in Georgia, including intense combat around Tskhinvali. The U.N. refugee agency estimated that about 115,000 people were displaced. Reported death tolls varied widely among Georgian, Russian and South Ossetian authorities and investigators. Photographs from the conflict show armored columns moving through mountain valleys, Georgian soldiers advancing along a street, artillery rocket launches, aircraft, burning buildings and ruined neighborhoods. Civilians are shown fleeing with their belongings, receiving treatment in an ambulance and a basement aid post, and carrying an injured child. Other scenes include a hooded detainee held against a wall, police helping a wounded soldier, grieving women and a soldier's body near damaged buildings. |
