1972 Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 Crash: 29 Deaths, 16 Survivors
Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed in the Andes in Argentina on October 13, 1972, with 45 people aboard. The FH-227D had been chartered to carry members and associates of the Old Christians rugby club of Montevideo. After an overnight stop in Mendoza, the aircraft struck terrain at Glaciar de las Lágrimas in Malargüe, near the Chilean border, after co-pilot Lt. Col. Dante Lagurara began descending too early. Twenty-nine people died, including eight killed by an avalanche on October 29, and 16 survived. After hearing by radio that the search had been suspended, the survivors ate flesh from the dead to remain alive. Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa left the wreck on December 12 and walked about 61 kilometers through the mountains. They reached muleteer Sergio Catalán on December 20, leading to the rescue of six survivors on December 22 and eight more on December 23. Photographs from the ordeal show the broken fuselage, its interior, survivors gathered on salvaged seats and figures signaling to rescue aircraft. The dead were buried in a common grave on January 18, 1973, and the remaining fuselage was burned.
