All 4 of my great grandfathers fought in WWI (I am British). 2 were killed. Of the surviving 2, one lost an arm and a leg, and the other had non functional arm and got gassed with chlorine. They both died at about 40 yrs old; my mum barely remembers being held on the lap of the one with 2 limbs missing. A whole generation gone, or survived to come back to the Spanish flu!
