Saudi Arabian Airlines Flight 163 (19 August 1980)

On August 19, 1980, a tragic air disaster occurred when Saudi Arabian Airlines Flight 163, a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, experienced a catastrophic in-flight fire. The flight, which had taken off from Riyadh International Airport and was en route to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, returned to Riyadh after the crew detected smoke in the aircraft's aft cargo compartment.

Approximately seven minutes after takeoff, the flight crew received warnings of smoke in the cargo hold. They spent over five minutes verifying the warning before making the decision to return to Riyadh. The aircraft made a successful emergency landing, but the fire persisted.

In a devastating outcome, all 287 passengers and 14 crew members aboard perished due to smoke inhalation. This incident stands as one of the deadliest in the history of Saudi Arabian Airlines and marked a significant event in global aviation safety.

Re: Saudi Arabian Airlines Flight 163 (19 August 1980)

The cabin was intact when the passengers were overcome with fumes/smoke. The subsequent fire would have destroyed the fuselage.

Re: Saudi Arabian Airlines Flight 163 (19 August 1980)

Thank god there are procedures they must follow now, back when this accident happened airlines were kinda slap-dash. I mean they allowed smoking onboard! I don't know how good Saudi crews are though, most Flight Attendants are women and since they're treated like shit over there, I don't imagine pilots treat cabin crew with much respect.

I can't imagine many Saudis are smart enough to become pilots. They'll just pay some westerners to do the job. Most major foreign airlines have British or Australian pilots.

I think it has less to do with "intelligence" and more to do with total lack of opportunity and facilitation of pilot training

Flying doesn't take a genius if you have the right training.
