Bangkok Red Shirt Protests and Crackdown, April 7-11, 2010
Thai troops moved to clear United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship demonstrators, widely known as Red Shirts, from the Phan Fa Bridge and Ratchadamnoen area of Bangkok on April 10, 2010. The protesters had demanded that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva dissolve parliament and call elections. Fighting continued into the night around Khok Wua and Khao San Road. Japanese cameraman Hiro Muramoto was among those killed. Early emergency-service figures listed 20 or 21 dead and 874 injured, while a later count put the deaths at 25. The wider political crisis from March through May killed at least 90 people. Accounts dispute who fired during the April clashes, including the role of armed men described as "black shirts." The photographs cover events from April 7 to April 11 in Bangkok and at the Thaicom satellite station in Pathum Thani. They show demonstrators storming parliament, crowds confronting troops and police, an overturned army truck, protesters on an armored personnel carrier at Democracy Monument, casualties receiving aid, tear gas, burning fuel, seized riot equipment and red coffins carried in a procession after the fighting.
