B2 Stealth Bombers going through a condensation cloud which normally forms when planes go through the sound barrier. but Firedog said that the B-2 is not a supersonic plane so i did some research on the picture and got the following information.

Edwards photographer awarded first place in photo contest: Photo by Bobbi Garcia, a civilian aerial photographer who works for Rohmann Services in support of the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) at Edwards Air Force Base, took this photo of a B-2 completing a mission over the Pacific Ocean, which appeared in the December 30, 2002 Aviation Week and Space Technology, to win the magazine's photo contest.

As for how I got the shot. I was in a chase F-16 being flown by Maj "Bernie" Cassidy. Between test points we would try to capture the condensation on still film. The camera I was using was a Hasselblad with a power winder (equates to about 1 frame per second) and the vapors only happen briefly and sporadically. As you can imagine, there was a little "spaz action" going on, trying not to take any unnecessary photos that would cause the power winder to be busy when I needed to be actually shooting.

We were fairly low in altitude when the shot was taken, and heading home from the mission.

There is enough moisture over the ocean to actually cause that phenomon to happen at various speeds, not just supersonic. That is why people on the navy carriers can get that shot more often than most land-based aircraft photographers.

Sorry dude, B2 isn't supersonic. No stealth aircraft before the F-22 is supersonic. If you want I could probably find out what that phenomena on the B2 is though.

I'll try to get an overtime at the fire station near the B-2 hanger sometime. I remember the first time the B-2 was publicly unveiled and flying. It never fails to be a sight to see when it takes flight because you just don't think something like that would fly.

I got information about the pictures and updated my initial post.

while I was researching a bit for my initial B-2 thread in there was a website which I don't seem to be able to find now which listed the planes that the B2's shape was based on, one was a plane which was a triangular shape with the same wing span but it was propelled by propellers attached at the back, looked pretty weird, but I don't think that plane was ever put in circulation

n fact Northrop had already produced two flying wing bombers long before the B-2. The B-35 (1st pic), was a propeller driven flying wing with a range of 7500 miles - even greater than the B-2! It first flew in June of 1946, less than a year after the end of World War Two. A later jet propelled variant, the B-49 (2nd pic), overcame some of the difficulties associated with the B-35's eight contra-rotating propellers, but had less range.

The Nazi's worked with "flying wing" shapes too if I remember correctly.

The big difference between teh B-2 and the B-35 and 49 is the B-2 has no vertical surfaces.
