Muhammad al-Durrah, 12, and his father, Jamal, were caught in an exchange of fire between Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen at Netzarim junction in the Gaza Strip on September 30, 2000. Cameraman Talal Abu Rahma filmed them crouching behind a concrete drum against a wall as Jamal tried to shield his son.

Correspondent Charles Enderlin reported that evening that Muhammad had been killed by fire from the Israeli position and that Jamal was wounded. The broadcaster later said it could not be certain which side fired the shots. The Israeli military initially accepted responsibility but later retracted that position. An Israeli government review in 2013 concluded that Israeli forces had not killed or injured Muhammad and questioned whether he had been struck at all. Enderlin and Palestinian groups rejected that conclusion.

Abu Rahma's footage shows Jamal raising an arm and covering Muhammad, a burst of dust or smoke obscuring them during the gunfire, and the pair slumped against the wall afterward. The footage became one of the defining images of the Second Intifada.

Incredibly deeply sad.. That poor bastard in that moment was doing all that he could to protect his son, he was absolutely powerless.. what a pointless hideous tragedy. I think of my own son being in that situation with me, its gut wrenching stuff.
The world watches on pauses for a second is shocked, we all collectively say that something should be done about it and then quickly move onto something else..
