Islam
Islam is the second religion in the world after Christianity, and it is fast gaining. There are between 1 and 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide. Despite the impression that you got in May, the vast majority of Muslims are not Arabs. Islam is the dominant religion in much of Asia, North Africa and Middle East. Islam means "submission", specifically the total submission to God's word as recorded in the Qur'an (or Koran) by the Prophet Muhammad, a message delivered to the 7th century and believed to be the final revelation of God humanity. Muslims believe the Koran is the word of God, exactly as told to Muhammad, without giving details or creative input of the Prophet himself. After the Koran, there are secondary texts known as hadiths, which are stories of the Prophet's life and times. Although most Muslims emulate Muhammad's way of life (sunna), as indicated in the Hadith, these texts are not considered unreproachable the Koran, and various Islamic sects may approve different or conflicting hadiths. There are five key criteria for being a Muslim, called the "five pillars of Islam, which include: * Belief in the Creed: "There is no God but God and Mohammed is his prophet". * Performing specific daily prayers. * Donation of a portion of your income to the needy. * Fasting as part of the celebration of Ramadan. * Make a pilgrimage to Mecca called the hajj. In addition to the pillars, there are many orders on the behavior and customs enshrined in the Koran and developed by the Hadith and religious decrees called fatwas. Muslims are forbidden to eat pork and other meat must be ritually prepared to be considered halal. Daily prayers are said in front of the Saudi city of Mecca, where stands a house of worship according to legend was built by the biblical figure Abraham, who is one of the prophets of Islam. Mecca and Jerusalem is sacred in Islam because the Quran says that Muhammad was mystically transported to everyone, where sections of the Koran was revealed to him. As in other religions, it is a day of trial, after the skeptics roast in hell for eternity, while the souls of the faithful are rewarded with transport to a sensual paradise with food, wine and fun the flesh in ample supply. Husbands and wives are united in heaven. Muslim men are allowed to have more than one wife, but they are required to treat all wives equally, advice that discourages many would-be polygamists. Although the cultural mores in many Muslim cultures tend to be repressive for women, very little real oppression is based in the true theology of Islam (this varies from sect). Islam recognizes the earlier prophets, including Moses, Abraham and Jesus, although it is not granted divine status. There are sections in the Koran, the prophets of talk before, but they are not the same as the traditions associated with Jewish and Christian literature. The Koran says that Jesus was not crucified, but someone else died in his place (similar to the beliefs held by some Gnostic. Most Muslims also honor the Virgin Mary. Muhammad has led several successful campaigns of conquest, and in the latter part of his life, the Qur'an has reflected this political situation, encompasing a wide range of civic issues. Consequently, Islam is a religion overtly political. Its members are required to seek political justice, and for some Muslims, the only way to do this is to establish Islamic states which apply sharia. There are two main factions of Islam, known as Sunnis and Shiites. The original bone of contention between the two sects was strictly a political battle over the succession to power of Mohammed, but other differences over time. After the death of Muhammad, Muslims have been directed by a series of caliphs. The Shiites believe that the caliphate could not move properly to the descendants of Ali, son-in-law of Mohammed, but the Sunni caliphs think may be chosen by the community. After the initial break on the Caliphate, other doctrinal differences finally arose. Both Sunni and Shia movements led to a number of splinter groups themselves. The Shiites have given birth to Ishmael, who leads the worship Assassin who played a key role in the Crusades. Another significant movement is Sufism, a mystical branch of Islam responsible for the great controversy in the Islamic culture and some of the greatest works of literary history. Within a couple of hundred years of the birth of Islam, a "return to roots" movement began. Basically, Islamic fundamentalism is substantially different than its Christian counterpart. Christian fundamentalism, for all its views to the Times-regressive, is essentially a modern interpretation of the Bible. There is no real historical basis for the concepts embraced by groups like the Assemblies of God. However, Islamic fundamentalism is clearly and authentically anti-modern. Fundamentalist sects like the Wahhabis, believe that Islam can not be kept pure when Muslims shape their lives as closely as possible on the example of Muhammad. Wahhabis reject almost all forms of religious or social modernization and innovation since about 950 AD There are also activists, political and / or extremist forms of Islam - some who are fundamentalists and others who are not. Some sects, such as Al-Takfir Wal Hijra, is devoted to the holy war - jihad - against the culture that offend their sensibilities, including Western culture, the American Way, have anything to do with Israel, or even fellow Muslims who are not sufficiently "Islamic" by some definition. Jihad has become one of the most difficult and contentious issues facing Muslims today. From the beginnings of Islam, Muslims have almost always been in conflict - with the Crusaders, the Mongols and often between them. Some of these conflicts were the result of external threats, while others were the kind of empire building which is fairly typical in any historical context. Jihad translates from Arabic as "struggle." Although modern, moderate Muslims have tried to promote a definition of jihad, which focuses primarily on personal and collective struggle for spiritual improvement, the traditional concept of holy war has more money in the world, for reasons that are perhaps obvious. Depending on whom you speak, there are several possible justifications for jihad, including Muslims oppressed save or recover the lands that were once Muslim (which includes the Middle East and much of Central and South Asia ) from so-called "infidel" influence. The definition of an infidel is extremely fluid, and may include Jews, Christians and even Muslims. While fundamentalism is considered outside the mainstream of Islamic thought, the fundamentalist sects have been successful recruiting war-torn and impoverished regions of the world. Rich Wahhabi Saudis have promoted this expansion, the financing of madrassas, religious schools preaching the Saudi brand of fundamentalist Islam. Partly driven by the growth of fundamentalism, Islam has become the fastest growing religion in the world. Because the point of view held by some militant Islamic fundamentalists, including many Westerners perceive Islam as a violent religion, which is not really fair. On the one hand, a very small percentage of the above 1.5 billion Muslims are terrorists or guerrilla fighters. However, the terrorists get all the press and are among the most active in converting the West to Islam, if you can not entirely discount the extremist elements in discussing religion. Like it or not, the extremists are very well lead the modern perception of Muslims, both within Islam and outside it. On the positive side, Islam is only 1,300 years, and religions have a life cycle defined as people. If you look at Christianity in 1300 CE, two words come to mind: Inquisition and Crusade.
