Hector Pieterson Photo by Sam Nzima: Soweto Uprising, June 16, 1976
Police shot 12-year-old Hector Pieterson on June 16, 1976, after opening fire on schoolchildren protesting Afrikaans-medium instruction in Soweto, South Africa. The shooting occurred on the first day of the Soweto uprising near Phefeni High School in Orlando West. Photographer Sam Nzima captured Mbuyisa Makhubo carrying the mortally wounded Pieterson along a dirt road as Pieterson's 17-year-old sister, Antoinette, ran beside them. Makhubo is the man whose anguished face is visible above Pieterson in the photograph. Nzima reportedly concealed the key roll of film in his sock after police confiscated another roll. The photograph became a defining image of the uprising and the apartheid government's violence against protesting students. June 16 is now observed in South Africa as National Youth Day.
