The Great Chicago Fire burned through central Chicago from October 8 to October 10, 1871. The fire destroyed about 17,500 buildings, left nearly 100,000 people homeless and killed about 300. It was brought under control early on October 10.

Photographs show widespread ruins across the city, including the remains of the Grand Pacific Hotel, damaged churches, the O'Leary property and an elevated panorama extending toward the lakeshore. The visual record also includes stereoscopic views, engraved scenes of the destruction and crowds fleeing across a bridge, and photographs later reproduced as postcards. A modern television segment supplements the historical views with present-day footage, reenactments and animation.
