"The Priest and the Dying Soldier": Aid from the Padre, Venezuela, 1962
Héctor Rondón Lovera photographed a navy chaplain giving last rites to a mortally wounded loyalist soldier during El Porteñazo, a military rebellion against President Rómulo Betancourt in Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, in June 1962. Accounts differ on whether the photograph was taken June 2 or June 4. Known as "Aid from the Padre" and "La ayuda del padre," the photograph shows the conscious soldier kneeling and pulling himself up by the cassock of chaplain Luis María Padilla as the priest looks toward the gunfire. A rifle lies on the wet, debris-strewn pavement beside them. The soldier had been hit by sniper fire, but published accounts give competing names for him. The photograph won the 1962 World Press Photo of the Year and the 1963 Pulitzer Prize for Photography.  ·
