I'm pretty sure that no matter how barbaric and heinous, agonising or torturous a punishment you can think of, someone, somewhere, has done it to someone.

Worst one I can recall hearing was 'death by frying', somewhere in Africa. Some local chief had obtained a large heavy copper plate, some 6 feet in diameter, and upon this victims were chained to a centre ring. And then a fire was lit underneath, and the poor bastard would very slowly be fried to death. The description was horrifying.
