At first glance the picture could be mistaken for a lichen-covered tree branch, but look a little closer and you'll spot a button-shaped eye lying flat against the bark.

Meet the Mossy Leaf-tailed Gecko — whose camouflage is so effective it's almost impossible to tell it apart from the tree it's resting on.

Gregg Dimijan, from Texas was lucky to snap the camera shy creature during a camping trip with his wife in the Amber Mountain in North Madagascar.

The reptiles have skin flaps running the length of their face and body that can be laid flat against solid ground — breaking up their outline and scattering any shadows.

The chameleon like creatures can also change their skin colour to resemble bark, lichen and moss making them almost impossible for prey to spot.

Which might just be a lifesaver considering the species are under serious threat from the illegal wildlife trade which sells them as pets.
