Charles Levy's Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Cloud Photograph, August 9, 1945
The United States dropped the Fat Man plutonium bomb on Nagasaki, Japan, late on the morning of August 9, 1945. Maj. Charles Sweeney piloted the B-29 Bockscar, which had left Tinian with Kokura as its primary target. Haze and smoke obscured Kokura, and the mission continued to the secondary target at Nagasaki. Lt. Charles Levy photographed the rising mushroom cloud from The Great Artiste, an instrument and observation B-29 accompanying Bockscar. His best-known frame shows the cloud's mushroom-shaped head and dark central column climbing above a white cloud deck. A July 1950 report by Nagasaki's atomic-bomb records preservation committee listed 73,884 people killed and 74,909 injured by the end of December 1945, from a population of about 240,000. Nagasaki city authorities have said an accurate final death count remains impossible. Other estimates place the number killed immediately at about 40,000 and the eventual toll near 80,000.

AND WHILE I AM ON MY SOAPBOX, the yanks wouldn't have dared drop these bombs if anyone else in the world had them. They knew they were the first and that no one could retaliate with like force.
