Slave Ship Wildfire at Key West, 1860, and HMS Daphne Captives, 1868
The USS Mohawk seized the slave bark Wildfire off the northern coast of Cuba and towed it into Key West, Florida, on April 30, 1860. The vessel carried about 510 Africans taken aboard near the Congo River. About 90 others had died during the voyage. Engravings published that June depict captives crowded on the Wildfire's deck, an emaciated youth, a woman with her baby, a captive identified as Princess Madia and the barracoon at Whitehead's Point where the survivors were held. On November 1, 1868, the Royal Navy's HMS Daphne freed East African captives from a slave dhow in the Indian Ocean while serving on the Zanzibar station. Photographs associated with the operation show people packed onto a vessel and groups of boys and young men gathered on a lower deck. Little is known about the individuals pictured. Re: Slave Ship Wildfire at Key West, 1860, and HMS Daphne Captives, 1868
Good post Funny how society always focuses on black slavery. What about the Scottish settlers who were kidnapped and used as slaves? The Egyptian slaves who built the pyramids? Slavery in ancient Rome. Went on everywhere. My dad spoke to an elderly black man who's grandfather was a slave and when he was offered freedom, he chose to remain a slave as he had a better lifestyle. Slavery is a very interesting topic |
