2009 Honduran Coup and Tegucigalpa Street Clashes
The Honduran military removed President Manuel Zelaya from office on June 28, 2009, and flew him to Costa Rica. Congress then named Roberto Micheletti as president. The United Nations, Organization of American States, United States and European Union called the removal a coup, while Micheletti's supporters described it as a constitutional succession. Clashes began outside the presidential palace in Tegucigalpa on June 29. Photographs dated from June 25 through July 3 show Zelaya with ballot boxes before his removal, Gen. Romeo Vásquez at a protest, Zelaya addressing the United Nations General Assembly, and demonstrators confronting police and troops. Other scenes show stone-throwers, tear gas, water cannon spray, burning tires, police beating protesters and large marches through the capital. A July 1 photograph shows marchers holding an undercover officer, while photographs from July 3 show bomb-squad officers responding after a grenade blast at a fast-food restaurant. |
