Mount St. Helens erupted in Skamania County, Washington, at 8:32 a.m. PDT on May 18, 1980. An earthquake triggered the collapse of the volcano's north flank, producing a massive landslide and lateral blast. The eruption killed 57 people directly and spread ash across 11 states. Seven additional deaths were linked indirectly to the disaster through a plane crash, a traffic accident and ash shoveling. Among those killed were volcanologist David A. Johnston, lodge owner Harry R. Truman and photographer Reid Blackburn.

Photographs taken before, during and after the eruption show the mountain on May 17, the rising eruption column, the ash plume seen from orbit, mudflows, flattened forests, wrecked vehicles and Blackburn's buried car. Other views document survivors being evacuated by helicopter, people wearing ash masks, the newly formed crater and debris-avalanche ponds that remained in 1981.
