Michael Brown was shot and killed during an encounter with Officer Wilson. The exact details of the encounter were the subject of intense investigation and debate. Witnesses' accounts varied, with some stating that Brown had his hands raised in surrender when he was shot, which gave rise to the protest slogan "Hands up, don't shoot." Even if he stole some cigars, he didn't deserve to die like that.

Admittedly I don't know the details of what occurred as I wasn't present, therefore I'm not trying to pick sides other than to contest that it sounds like he had put his hands up and said "don't shoot" - after which he was allegedly shot multiple times. And that seems a little excessive.
