New Mexico State Police Officer Darian Jarrott, 28, was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Interstate 10 near Deming on February 4, 2021. The suspect, identified as Omar Felix Cueva, 39, fled the scene and was later killed in a shootout with police.

According to the New Mexico State Police, Officer Jarrott pulled over Cueva, who was driving a white Chevrolet pickup truck, for a window tint violation. As Jarrott approached the vehicle, Cueva exited the truck with an AR-15-style rifle and opened fire, striking the officer multiple times. Jarrott was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cueva then fled westbound on Interstate 10, leading to a 40-mile pursuit involving multiple law enforcement agencies. During the chase, Cueva exchanged fire with officers, injuring one Las Cruces Police Department officer. The pursuit ended when Cueva's vehicle collided with a tire deflation device near Las Cruces, and he was fatally shot by officers after exiting his vehicle with a firearm.

Officer Jarrott had served with the New Mexico State Police since 2015 and was a father of three young children. New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Jarrott's service and sacrifice.

Questionable work on the part of the officer. Sorry he's dead, but you would think he would have commanded him to man leave the truck empty handed (and watch to make sure he did), hands in the air and watch him walk around to the FRONT of the truck (shorter distance). Officer could have stood, weapon in hand, shielded by the truck. Command him to put hands on the hood of the truck and move feet backwards to put him in an off balance position, then secure him. How in God's name do you allow the guy to leave the vehicle carrying ANYTHING. Hard to hear with the wind interference but it sounded like the cop knew he had a weapon.
