Murder of New York Prostitute Carrie Brown: Possible Jack the Ripper Victim.
April 1891 - In a grim chapter of the city's history, the murder of Carrie Brown, a New York prostitute known for reciting Shakespearean verses, sent shockwaves through the streets. Her brutal killing, often referred to as the "Old Shakespeare Murder," remains unsolved to this day. Carrie Brown, also known as "Old Shakespeare" due to her penchant for quoting the Bard, plied her trade in the notorious Red Light District of New York City. On April 23, 1891, her life took a tragic turn when her lifeless body was discovered in a seedy hotel located at the intersection of Eleventh Avenue and West 27th Street. The crime scene was a gruesome tableau. Brown had met a violent end, her throat brutally slashed, and her body mutilated in a manner that horrified the city. The case quickly became a sensation, drawing the morbid curiosity of both the public and the press. The circumstances surrounding Carrie Brown's murder were cloaked in mystery. Investigators and newspapers speculated about potential motives and the identity of the killer. Some even suggested a connection to Jack the Ripper, the infamous serial killer who had terrorized London a few years earlier. Others suspected a local lunatic or a disgruntled customer. Despite intensive scrutiny and multiple arrests, the case eventually went cold, and justice remained elusive. It's fascinating to see photos from a murder case in the 19th century. Reading through the thread, it does seem like a copycat killer than Jack the Ripper himself.
