In June 2008, the Jodi Arias case emerged as a significant event in American criminal history, capturing widespread media attention. Jodi Arias, a 28-year-old aspiring photographer from California, was charged with the brutal murder of her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander, in his Mesa, Arizona home. Alexander, a 30-year-old motivational speaker and salesman, was found dead on June 9, 2008, with multiple stab wounds, a slit throat, and a gunshot wound to the head.

The investigation quickly focused on Arias, who had a tumultuous and intermittent relationship with Alexander since meeting in September 2006. Despite their breakup in 2007, they maintained a physical relationship. Arias initially denied involvement in Alexander's death but later changed her story, claiming she killed him in self-defense after he attacked her. The prosecution, led by Juan Martinez, argued that the murder was premeditated, fueled by jealousy and rage over Alexander's relationships with other women.

The trial, which began in January 2013, was marked by graphic and explicit testimony, including a recorded phone sex conversation and photographs from the day of the murder. Arias' defense centered on claims of physical and emotional abuse by Alexander, which the prosecution vehemently disputed. The trial gained notoriety for its salacious details, extensive media coverage, and the defendant's unusual behavior, including Arias taking the stand for 18 days.

On May 8, 2013, Arias was found guilty of first-degree murder. The jury, however, was deadlocked on the sentencing, leading to a retrial of the penalty phase. In the second sentencing trial, after another jury deadlock, Judge Sherry Stephens sentenced Arias to life in prison without the possibility of parole on April 13, 2015.
