From the sound of it, black powder or some other low velocity propellant was used. My 1858 Remington shoots soft lead .44 round ball bullets and has a similar sounding report versus the "crack" of modern smokeless cartridges.

They said he bled to death, they couldn't stop the bleeding. Two bullet wounds to the neck 5 cm apart as well as a deep shot to the heart area.

He didn't drop on the second shot because he was trying to duck, he dropped because he got hit in the neck... if that's even what you're implying here.
